Former ChampCar / Indy Lights open wheel veteran “Speedy” DAN CLARKE paced the P1 field in qualifying on Friday as well as finishing “1st in Class” at the end of both Saturday and Sunday’s sprint races. Clarke, normally an ITC driver coach for Isringhausen Motorsports, finished in the Top 7 overall both days on a track competing with much faster cars, proving that his road-racing skills have adapted to the very quick and extremely agile Porsche Caymans.

Also on the P1 podium was BodyMotion Racing team owner and driver MIKE BAVARRO who stepped into the car at the very last minute and bested Colorado’s DAVE SPEIGHTS as both finished in their 2nd and 3rd place spots both days.

Last fall, a nasty crash at Road America left CHARLES BELLUARDO‘s Porsche Cayman in pieces but he sliced through the field and battled with Speights all weekend on the track to provide some interesting spectating winning the P2 class both days.

ITC newcomer SAVANNAH RICKLI proved that “girls can race too” grabbing 2nd place in P2 with RALPH MARRA scoring a podium in 3rd.

The Intercontinental Trophy Cup Series (ITC) is at the New Jersey Motorsports Park for Round 2 of the 2012 season with a record field on track.  The second year series competes with Porsche Cayman’s, ultra-fast and ultra-competitve and according to those who have driven one, “they are a fun race car to roll off of any grid!”

The series runs the gambit of “casual weekend warriors” to “young-up-and-coming road racers and this weekend, veterans like <strong>RON COHN</strong>,  a former Formula Atlantics and Camel GT driver joins Champ-Car and Indy Light’s driver, <strong>”Speedy” Dan Clarke</strong>.  A pair of debuts from opposite ends of the grid includes newcomer, 18 year old <strong>SAVANNAH RICKLI</strong>, a competitor in the last two Pikes Peak Hill Climbs, will make her maiden run and 2011 series champion, <strong>TIM FOX,</strong> returns to pull double duty competing in both ITC and the Continental Sports Car Challenge debuting in a brand new Aston Martin.

He never looked back and has continued to race numerous weekends a year as the pastime has become his escape from his daily upper management positions with two corporations plus assisting his wife’s veterinary practice.  “Racing is really great for me because when I’m racing, I cannot think of anything else…it helps me focus and clear my mind.”

The small team owner from Colorado gave up downhill skiing and mountain biking only to fill the void with swimming 2.5 miles four days a week and driving a Porsche Cayman the last three years, joining ITC for the first time at Round 1 in Sebring last February.

Last year after a run in the Indy Lights, Dan switched gears and became a driver coach with GEOFF ISRINGHAUSEN, one of those who was instrumental in the foundation of the Intercontinental Trophy Cup Series.   Making the transition from driving to coaching is never easy, especially when you still have the passion to race.  But thanks to the relationships created in the sport, Dan has found a way to release the “frustration” by giving back and sharing while hopefully “shortcutting a driver to not make the same mistakes that I made on my way up.”

In May, the young Brit will pull double-duty at the New Jersey Motorsports Park by coaching the Isringhausen team but also splitting time in a Porsche Cayman with series newcomer, SAVANNAH RICKLI.  Needless to say, he may begin a new chapter in his career as he has made it clear that “I keep asking Geoff to make me the Isringhausen Works driver so that I can compete, coach and recruit (new drivers) for the team…!”

RaceFanRadio’s CHARLIE BROWN caught up with “Speedy Dan” in between sessions of a driver’s school and asked him several questions about the comparison between open-wheel racing and sports car racing and why the ITC makes so much sense for various drivers trying to evolve their career while battling the economics of the sport.

“Sports car racing is a great place to have a career…the racing is a lot of fun and the cars are really fast.  Everybody that I have talked to that have made the transition from open wheel to sports cars always talk about how much fun it is.  And in professional motorsports, you don’t hear about how much people are having fun because of the pressure to perform at the top level…”

Like most other road racing sanctioning bodies, the case is true for the Intercontinental Trophy Cup Series after launching its second season the first weekend in February at the legendary Sebring International Raceway over 8 weeks ago.  And with a few more weeks left on the calendar before Rounds 3 & 4 at the New Jersey Motorsports Park, there has been a ton of activity amongst teams, drivers and even the series support personnel.

March and April has seen most teams posting laps at various venues to gain valuable track data and seat time and regardless of skill level, “you can never spend too much time in a race car”, quipped ITC driver coach and open-wheel road racer, Dan Clarke at New Jersey Motorsports Park’s recent “Open Track Day”.

As the series continues to attract new driver / team combinations, behind the scenes in the Indianapolis shop, there has been a flurry of activity as Dougie Livingston and crew have been preparing for the “big party with GRAND-AM” May 11-13^th.  The series principal and support staff have spent the last several days designing and building new assets that will make the ITC paddock look even more impressive.

“We really want to show the sports car community what we have to offer and it is our desire to really knock ‘em out when we unload in New Jersey”, said Livingston.  “With what we have done this past week, I think we will most definitely turn some heads for both race teams AND race fans…!”

(Tuesday, April 10, 2012 – Indianapolis) The Intercontinental Trophy Cup Series is heading into the second event weekend of it’s sophomore season with extreme optimism.  New sponsor / partner relationships continue to evolve the contingency program, just about the only one of its kind at this level of road racing.  Teams can accumulate contingency awards which help defray future costs to participate in the series.  AND this is at a level where drivers and teams are used to seeing dollars only going one direction!

“Most team owners are worried about return on investment but here in our series, you are able to offset some of the expenses”, said SCOTT LEDER, ITC’s Director of Driver Development.  “We have sponsors who offer a check for winning the pole, reducing your tire budget and even the support of your crew!”

The series was designed to give a driver and/or a team owner an opportunity to go road racing in a very competitive race car at an ultra competitive price.  Not only is the Porsche Cayman a fun car to drive, it is an affordable option for both new and experienced racers.  Running on seven of the most famous and challenging tracks in the United States, the series offers a wonderful platform for any driver who wants to advance to a top level series or for those who just want to hone their skills.

Recently, 2011 GRAND-AM GT Class Champion and Co-Driver of the Brumos Porsche, ANDREW DAVIS, visited the ITC paddock and said, “The Porsche Cayman is a great car to drive and this is a great place for young drivers OR gentlemen drivers to learn and compete…and I like seeing any series that allows GT drivers to develop at any age…”

Following an open test at New Jersey Motorsports Park, numerous teams took advantage of that opportunity in hopes of gaining knowledge for the series return in mid-May.  “Competitively, it’s a great challenge and this car is readily accessible for parts and development…and bang for your buck, it looks good and it runs strong,” continued Scott Leder. “A young driver can get great exposure and experience plus next month, we’ll be on the same track as the GRAND-AM teams,…what a great opportunity to be seen by some of the best in the business as they are always keeping a watchful eye on good talent that is out there.”
